Backflow Devices & Inspection
Backflow is the reversal of the flow of water from its intended direction in any pipeline or plumbing system. Backflow can allow bacteria and other contaminants to enter you tap and drinking water supply. It is dangerous because it can allow drinking water to become contaminated and unusable and possibly deadly. Backflow inspection is state mandated annually, at the very least, for all commercial properties and for residential properties it is required at least once during its lifetime. It is usually done during the installation of the device. The only way to avoid this problem is to install a backflow prevention device. Backflow prevention's devices are mechanical plumbing devices installed in a plumbing system to prevent water from flowing backwards and becoming contaminated.
The physical connections between drinking water pipes and substances which are not meant for drinking are called cross connection. To protect these cross connections and prevent backflow into the town's water distribution system, a backflow prevention device must be installed at the points of cross connection. It must be, as required by law, tested annually by a certified backflow device inspector. Greg Tanzer is a certified backflow device inspector.
